What Chinese buyers look for in African tea

For exporters weighing whether the Chinese market is worth the effort.

Kenya sells around two per cent of its tea exports to China, against 36 per cent to Pakistan (Tea Board of Kenya, 2025). Part of that gap is access. Part of it is that the two markets want different products.

Orthodox and CTC are not interchangeable

Most Kenyan black tea is CTC: cut, tear, curl. It brews fast, takes milk well and suits the strong-cup habit of Kenya's largest export markets.

Chinese consumption is built around leaf tea brewed without milk, where the appearance of the dry leaf and the character of the liquor both matter to the buyer. An exporter approaching China with a CTC portfolio alone is offering a product shaped for a different drinking culture.

This is not a barrier so much as a specification. Kenya produces orthodox and specialty tea, and purple tea is a genuinely distinctive product with no direct equivalent elsewhere.

Grade consistency over grade height

A recurring theme in buyer conversations is that consistency beats peak quality. An importer building a branded product needs the same cup across repeat shipments more than an exceptional single lot.

That favours suppliers who can document their process rather than those who can show their best sample.

Packaging and channel

Packaging that suits a bulk auction buyer does not suit an importer supplying retail or e-commerce. Where the tea ends up determines the format, and the format is usually decided before the price.

Traceability

Origin documentation, certification and the ability to trace a lot back to a factory and a picking period are increasingly a condition of the conversation rather than a premium feature.

The practical answer

Every point above is settled between a specific buyer and a specific supplier, not in general. That is what the Investment Forum and the B2B meetings on Day 2 are for, and what the expo on Day 3 puts on a table.

Detail on the sessions is published in phases. This piece is background written from public industry sources and should not be read as a summit position on any grade or market.
